December 21-Winter Solstice

7 Dudes skied today in ideal conditions with a temperature between -9 & -4 C.The 2nd photo shows us at the junction of Kawartha & Beaver. We skied north on Kawartha, next few skiing photos, to Wolf, next group photo. Skied up Wolf to Trillium photo of Barry, Gord & Pete Mac.Then skied down Trillium to Beaver where Barry spotted moose footprints, next photo, Gord & Frank are standing beside the moose tracks.The top 3 photos were also taken at the junction of Trillium with Beaver.We returned to the chalet on Beaver, having skied 7.5 km. Enjoyed lunch at Honeys before returning home. Kenner is closed until there is more snow, PL will likely be closed for the year because of the logging. The next date for our Dudes ski will be Tuesday January 4 2011, meet in the Zoo parking lot at 9:15 to carpool or KNSC at 10:00, Happy New Year!.

Feb 25 2010 A Day of Powder Skiing

Gord Schmidt, Barry Diceman, & Pete MacLoghlin headed up to KNSC for a ski during a snowstorm so we hopeful that this would be another memorable day of skiing & we were not disappointed! The groomer had been out & as time was limited we opted to search out the powder slopes. We skied across Beaver to Kenner, 1st photo of Gord. Just as we started down Kenner Bruce Hancock appeared so he decided to turn around & join our search for powder. Lower Kenner did provide a gorgeous run, photo of Gord & Bruce ,with so many long gentle sections as we skied down to the "Big Hill" where you can check the guy's form. Continued on Kenner, see top 2 photos of Pete taken by Bruce, to Kawartha & up to Deer, then across Deer to the Laderach cabin. Headed down Adam Scott for a fantastic downhill powder run to Kawartha & up to the big down hill run just before the Woodfine Chalet to complete a fabulous 11 km ski. The photos describe the conditions better than I can in words, but I feel that this was the ultimate in Nordic skiing !

Feb 23 1010 A Ski on Fresh Snow!

We had 5 skiers today, Peter Hamley, Ken Featherstone, Barry Diceman, Ian Sine, & Pete MacLoghlin. There had been a snowfall of about 8 cm overnight but because the temperature was around 0 C we were concerned that the snow would stick to our skis. We headed out to the Kawartha junction (1st photo) where we met a lady whose ski bases were covered with a layer of 2 cm of dense snow, so after rewaxing our skis continued on Beaver (next 2 photos) to Trillium where we met the groomer which had finished packing the Kawartha-Trillum loop. Skied up Trillium to Wolf (photo of Ian skiing), on Wolf to Kawatha (upper 3 photos) & down to Red Fox, across Fox where we enjoyed the newly set track to Trillium. Then down Trillium to Kawartha & a thrilling run down the "Big Hill" on the new snow, returning to the Woodfine Chalet having skied a distance of 9 km. It was a treat to ski in a winter wonderland + the conditions allowed us to glide on the skis. I have a pair of waxles skiis & was very pleased with their performance in the mild temperatures. With proper waxing using both gliding & red gripping wax the others also had an enjoyable ski although they did slip slightly on the uphill slopes but we did not have the problem of the snow sticking to the ski bases which can be a disaster. The groomer told us that with the new snow they hoped to have Owl open on the weekend

Thursday Feb 11 2010 - Barry's Award

Barry has the distinction of being the 1st Dude to be placed on the Honour Role of our Blog site! I had nominated Barry as a recipient of the provincial Celebration 2010 awards. Barry's nonination was accepted & last night he attended the presentation ceremony at The Evinrude Centre where he received a handsome trophy & a certificate from the Premier. The photo was taken today outside the Tanney cabin. Mary Smith the Deputy Reeve of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Twp is standing beside Barry. We had met Mary skiing & she felt that a member from KNSC should be nominated to represent the club, sent me the application forms & the rest is history! It was another gorgeous day, we skied a 10 km loop to Tanney.

Sat Feb 7 2010 - The Ski Patrol Mascot

While on Ski Patrol duty this past Saturday Peter Hamley caught sight of this guy keeping guard outside the Tanney Cabin. Moral of the photo is to always have a camera closeby because you never know what will be around the next corner! Peter skied over 25 km using a combination of his skating & classic skis!

Ian Sine, Mike Evans, & Pete MacLoghlin skied a 11 km loop on this gorgeous day. Started up Kawartha, 1st photo, across Fox, 2nd photo of Mike, up Trillium to Wolf then down Kenner where the photos of Ian were taken. Returned to the Chalet on Beaver, note the photos of a "hole in the snow".

Tuesday January 19

We had a record 8 skiers turn out today including Ken Featherstone for his 1st ski day with the Dudes. The trails continue to be in excellent condition, 2-3 cm of fresh snow had fallen by the time we completed our ski! We did a 9.5 km loop, heading up Kawartha to Red Fox, bottom 2 photos, then on Fox to Trillium, down Adam Scott to the Laderach Cabin where the remaining photos were taken. Enjoyed a break at Laderach then continued down Adam Scott to Kawartha on which we returned to the Woodfine Chalet. Enjoyed lunch at Honeys. We had 4 skiers today, Pete MacLoghlin, Peter Hamley, Barry Diceman, & Gord Schmidt. It was another ideal day for skiing as you can see in the photos with a temperature of -10 C. We skied across Beaver to Kenner, 1st 3 photos. Then up Kenner to Wolf, 4th photo. Then down Wolf to Kawartha where we could hear the logging operators. The top 2 photos were taken at the junction of Wolf & Kenner. Skied down Kawartha to the chalet for a distance of 11 km. Enjoyed lunch at Honeys.
