Barry’s Ski to the Bennett Cabin
On Sunday Jan 23 Barry Diceman + 9 other skiers braved extreme temperatures -18 to -22 C to ski from the Woodfine Chalet to the Bennett Cabin a 25 km round trip on a clear beautiful sunny day. The Bennett Cabin is 5 km north of the Tanney cabin on a challenging wilderness trail that is not groomed apart from snowmobile tracks. The photos speak for themselves!

Barry Diceman & Pete MacLoghlin skied a 15 km loop on this absolutely ideal day for skiing, powder snow with fast tracks, sun, blue skies & a cool -15 C. We skied up Kawartha, bottom 2 photos, to Wolf & continued north on Kawartha. Barry is standing beside the log frame shelter built for the annual KNSC ski race from Apsley in the 1970 & 80’s that is 100 meters north of the Owl junction. Next 2 photos show the powder snow on N.Kawartha as we skied towards Otter, where Barry is standing in front of the red ribbon closing off Kawartha to the north of Otter. Skied across Otter, photos of the trail crossing the big beaver dam gully & the rocky shoreline of the spectacular beaver pond, to Owl & up to the Tanney cabin. From Tanney skied down Kenner to Beaver, top photo taken at the Bullrush Lk lookout, then across Beaver to the chalet. Kenner was a blast to ski with a very fast track & Barry left me far behind with a surge of adrenalin as he relived his racing days skiing down from Wolf to the woods where he had to slow down as the trail narrows with curves to negotiate as you ski up & down the many gullies!

We had 6 skiers today, photos courtesy of Pete & Gord. Since last Tuesday there had been a significant smowfall of about 12cm which allowed the groomers to groom & set tracks on all the trails but we had a huge temperature swing in the previous 24 hours from a low in Ptbo on Monday of -31.5 C to 0 C when we arrived at KNSC! However the snow was dry so the skiing was very good.We skied on Beaver to Trillium, bottom 2 photos, continued on Beaver to Kenner, next photo, to the lookout over Bullrush Lk, next 3 photos, north on Kenner, 2 photos of Peter, to Wolf, 2 group photos. Down Wolf to Trillium to Red Fox top photos which we skied to Kawartha & back to the chalet for a distance of 10 km.

Tuesday January 11 2011
We had 7 skiers today, check the photos to identify us! Since there is only a thin layer of snow covering the trails skiing is limited to the Tanney Loop which we skied today After taking a group photo at the chalet we skied across Beaver to Trillium, next 2 photos. The Beaver trail leading to the Laderach cabin is behind Ken & Frank. Then north on Trillium to Red Fox, next photo, onto Wolf, next 3 photos, Kenner & the Tanney cabin where we fed many chickadees while a nuthatch observed us on a branch. Leaving Tanney we skied up Kenner to Owl, 2 photos above the Tanney cabin, down Owl to Kawartha. The photo 2nd from the top shows the Owl Trail which had the best snow cover. The top photo was taken by Frank at the Wolf-Trillium junction. Kawartha is marginal & probably won’t be skiable until there is a snowfall which is predicted over the next few days. The photos give some idea of the snow coverage which is a bare minimum but did provide good conditions today. Open areas such as Owl have more snow coverage than the woodland sections. Lets hope for more snow so we can ski next Tuesday!
